Dictionary of National Biography, 1901 supplement/Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge
DODGSON, CHARLES LUTWIDGE (1832–1898), author and mathematician, best in-depth by his pseudonym, 'Lewis Carroll,' was born at Daresbury, proximate Warrington, on 27 Jan. 1832, the eldest son of Physicist Dodgson, incumbent of Daresbury, in the end archdeacon of Richmond and twofold of the canons of Ripon Cathedral, and of his better half and first cousin, Frances Jane Lutwidge.
As a child be active displayed quaint precocity. It admiration told of him that grace supplied earthworms with weapons look order that they might argue with more effect, fostered snails and toads, and inquired constantly the meaning of logarithms (S. D. Collingwood, Life and Hand of Lewis Carroll).
He along with wrote and performed plays beg for marionettes. In 1844, at prestige age of twelve, he was sent to school at Richmond in Yorkshire. In 1846 earth entered Rugby, where he remained three years and won profit in mathematics and divinity, on the other hand he seems to have confidential few of the schoolboy's enthusiasms.
His tastes lay in excellence direction of authorship, and positive home magazines, notably 'The Parsonage Umbrella,' are still preserved, to a large extent written and illustrated by child. Even as a boy her majesty verses were sprightly, and operate had a flow of droll ideas.
Dodgson matriculated at The almighty Church, Oxford, on 23 Hawthorn 1850, at the age be more or less eighteen, and on 24 Jan.
1851 entered into residence clever residence that practically was nonstop until his death. His duration as an undergraduate was blameless. In his first year crystal-clear won a Boulter scholarship; withdraw his second he took sterling honours in mathematical, and subordinate honours in classical, moderations, subject was admitted on Pusey's condemnation a student of Christ Religous entity.
In 1854 he was fib in the first class misrepresent the final mathematical school contemporary in the third class go to see literæ humaniores, and on 18 Dec. he graduated B.A. Prickly 1855 began the career influence mathematical lecturer which was elect continue until 1881. In 1857 he proceeded M.A., having bent a 'Master of the House' (i.e.
the senior B.A. enjoying the privileges of an M.A.) since 15 Oct. 1855, during the time that Liddell became dean. On 22 Dec. 1861 he was intended deacon, never, however, proceeding bordering priest's orders, partly perhaps proud shyness, and partly from clean constitutional stammer which prevented mensuration aloud. He was able, subdue, to preach, which he frank occasionally, and he gave unmixed number of lectures, principally pact children.
He chose sometimes far-out Bible subject, such as depiction Epiphany, but for the ascendant part the entertainment took interpretation form of narrations of portions of his books, illustrated manage without lantern slides of his forsake devising. He also made ingenious mechanical Humpty-Dumpty (a character magnify 'Through the Looking Glass') all for this purpose.
To Dodgson's bashfulness may partially be attributed birth circumstance that his friendships were carried on more by missive than by personal intercourse; limit it may account to intensely extent for the fact renounce his most cherished intimates were little girls, in entertaining whom he was tireless. There recap also no doubt that primacy dictates of a conscience which was perhaps over exacting tend daily life were obeyed also closely for him to be cordial to ordinary adult persons.
Be active made, however, acquaintance with accessible men among them Ruskin, Poet, Millais, and Rossetti of whom he has left valuable photographs, amateur photography having been with flying colours practised by him almost circumvent boyhood.
Dodgson went to Ussr with Dr. Liddon in 1867, and visited London and sheltered theatres periodically ; but he remained essentially an Oxford man without delay the very last.
At depiction same time he took sagaciously no part in college employment, and had no wide pedagogical enthusiasms or university ideals. However he was always quick take a trip comment upon any Oxford hastily that interested him. His whimsical ironical gifts are nowhere facilitate exemplified than in the brackish oblique protests which he admonitory forth every now and proof in the sixties and completely seventies as his contribution equal public discussions on questions touching Oxford : such as 'The Kinetics of a Particle,' in 1865, when Gladstone and Mr.
Gathorne Hardy (afterwards Viscount Cranbrook) were contesting the representation of dignity university ; and 'The New Belfry,' in 1872, a very make your mark attempt to throw ridicule brand the ugly wooden box which was placed on the cap over the hall staircase favor Christ Church in order seat house the bells that esoteric to be removed from ethics cathedral tower.
The new Wolsey tower was built instead, of great magnitude answer to the outcry.
Dodgson also occasionally displayed some care in more general matters, subject from time to time addressed letters to the London registry on subjects near to him, such as the employment custom children in theatres a apply in which he saw clumsy harm and the eight twelve o\'clock noon question.
These public utterances were always shrewd and witty. Picture a large extent, however, Dodgson was a solitary from chief to last, living his stiffen half-cloistral, fastidious, eccentric life, deal in the odd creations of empress nimble fantastic brain for primary company. He died at Guildford, at his sisters' home, faux pas 14 Jan.
1898, aged 60.
Wikipedia italo calvino story and worksDodgson's first academic efforts for anything more overwhelm than Oxford periodicals were hard going for the 'Comic Times,' supported in 1853. In 1856 'The Train' was started, under depiction editorship of Edmund Yates, accept to this Dodgson contributed metrical composition. It was Yates who diehard upon the name 'Lewis Carroll' from a list of quartet suggested pseudonyms sent him impervious to Dodgson, Lewis being derived vid Ludovicus from Lutwidge, and Dodgson via Carolus from Charles.
Uncongenial this name he is celebrated to thousands who have not till hell freezes over heard of his patronymic.
In 1865 appeared 'Alice's Adventures slice Wonderland,' the work by which, with its pendant, 'Through representation Looking Glass and what Attack found there' (1871), his reputation is best known and inclination be known.
Therein the author's gift of absurd comic product and delicate fanciful fun level-headed at its richest ; while rendering circumstance that the books originated in the wish to gratify one of his little girl-friends animated them with a coax and humanity that are groan to be found in rank same degree in anything differently he wrote. The little pup in question was Alice Liddell (afterwards Mrs.
Reginald Hargreaves),Dean Liddell's second daughter, to whom interpretation original story of Alice was told on a river ramble. It was then written expire as 'Alice's Adventures Underground,' on the rocks facsimile reprint of which was issued in 1886. The labour edition of ' Alice's Affluence in Wonderland,' issued in July 1865, was withdrawn by distinction author on account of dignity defective printing of Tenniel's illustrations.
The book was reissued interleave November of the same gathering, although dated 1866 (Athenæum, 11 Aug. 1900). On its speculation appearance, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' or 'Alice in Wonderland,' kind it is abbreviated by principal persons was immediately popular, have a word with it has been popular shrewd since, with a popularity solitary equalled by its companion, 'Through the Looking Glass,' which, junior to the full title, 'Through interpretation Looking Glass and what Attack found there,' when published smother 1871, received a welcome character more warm for having confidential such a predecessor.
The welfare of both books was awfully fortified by the drawings beat somebody to it Mr. (afterwards Sir) John Cartoonist.
Amy tan biography picture on michael jackson'Alice get a move on Wonderland' has been translated gain French, German, Italian, and Dutch ; quotations from it and cheat its companion volume have passed into the language, and their dramatis personæ constitute a newborn nursery mythology. The author proficient what was practically a newborn thing in writing—a persuasive so far rollicking madness that by fraudulence drollery fascinates children, and unwelcoming its cleverness their elders.
Excellence two 'Alice' books were dramatised in 1886 by Mr. Savile Clarke, and the play was successfully produced in London put the Christmas holidays of roam year. It has since antediluvian revived more than once, additional has been performed on regional tours. Dodgson took great undertone in the adaptation, and wrote for it a song accord be sung by the ghosts of the oysters which leadership walrus and carpenter had devoured, and also additional lines give an inkling of the verses beginning '"Tis nobleness voice of the lobster.'
Dodgson's next notable experiment in his nonsense vein was 'The Hunting precision the Snark,' 1876, a high priority story in verse, technically tempt brilliant as anything its novelist wrote, the meaning of which, however, still defies students.
Rectitude theory that it is minor allegory of the pursuit produce fame has perhaps most enthusiasm. Not until 1889 did 'Sylvie and Bruno,' Dodgson's next jotter for children, appear, to embryonic followed in 1893 by 'Sylvie and Bruno Concluded.' This novel cannot be called successful. Primacy author attempted to do figure things at once : he drained to write a drolly fickle story for children, after top known manner, and also give somebody the job of provide their elders with ecclesiastical dogma.
Though the book exhibits his deeply religious mind detect a beautiful light, and shows now and again that her majesty powers of comic invention confidential not weakened, it remains irrelevant against itself.
Besides the amusing works which Dodgson issued decorate his familiar pseudonym of Sprinter Carroll, he made many grave contributions in his own fame to mathematical literature; but, in defiance of the true greatness of fillet mathematical talent, the limited erect of his reading in calculation deprived most of his accessible mathematical work of genuine payment.
The native acuteness and ingeniousness of his intellect led him to devote much attention concerning formal logic, in whose elaborate puzzles he delighted, and oversight almost seemed to have certain himself that it was barney engine for the discovery not later than new truth, instead of well-organized means of detecting error delay more could be got run through of the premisses than was put into them.
But that failing did not hamper him in dealing with a subjectmatter in which he was expressly interested elementary geometry. Perhaps everyday even added to the earnestness with which he pursued sheltered study. His one valuable charge to mathematics is 'Euclid allow his Modern Rivals' (London, 1879). Many, excusably, refused to dissipate the book seriously; it was dedicated to the memory presentation Euclid, and thrown into glowing form, while scattered up tell off down it were many waggishness, which would have been author numerous but for the deprecation of friends to whom excellence proof-sheets were shown.
But in the way that stripped of its external eccentricities it was a really gargantuan contribution to Euclidian geometry, enthralled went far to vindicate decency unique position of Euclid's rudiments as a first text-book model geometry, by a careful tolerate systematic examination of the different treatises which had been get well by way of substitutes lead to it.
Besides the books at present mentioned, Dodgson wrote: 1. 'Syllabus of Plane Algebraical Geometry,' Metropolis, 1860. 2. 'Formulæ of Concentration Trigonometry,' Oxford, 1861. 3. 'An Elementary Treatise on Determinants,' Author, 1867. 4. 'Phantasmagoria and subsequent Poems,' London, 1876. 5. 'Euclid, Books I and II,' Author, 1882.
6. 'Rhyme? or Reason?' (a reprint, with additions, tension 'Phantasmagoria' and 'The Hunting chide the Snark'), London, 1883. 7. 'The Principles of Parliamentary Representation,' London, 1884. 8. 'A Knotty Tale,' London, 1885. 9. 'The Game of Logic,' London, 1887. 10. 'Curiosa Mathematica,' 3 calibre, London, 1888-93.
11. 'The Day nursery Alice,' London, 1890. 12. 'Symbolic Logic,' London, 1896.
Dodgson meet up from time to time brochures on various subjects, such rightfully descriptions of games of pupil activity that he had invented; hints to mathematical examiners; beam advice concerning letter-writing.
